Review

Megan Smith-the protagonist is a nineteen year old girl who works as a
waitress in Breenie’s Diner in Myrtle Creek,Oregon. It is practically in the middle
of nowhere. But Megan has chosen to stay in this place deliberately.

“Myrtle Creek was safe, so small and inconsequential you couldn’t even find
it on a lot of maps unless you zoomed in on a digital copy or bought a local
fold-up. It sat along the I-5 in southern Oregon where hardly anyone
stopped for anything but the local gas stations. I knew I couldn’t stay here
forever; it’d already been a year and half. And if I stayed even one day
too long, he could catch up with me.”

She has lost both of her parents and is on the run from someone.Someone who
had kept her captive and put her through an excruciating amount of pain. She
still bears the scars from the night of her escape. But they also remind her of
what she had to do to escape.

“But what I hated most about my burns was the constant reminder of why
I had them. Of what I’d done. Why I’d never feel peace of mind again,
always living in fear of retribution.”

One day a female customer-Thea comes into the diner and calls her
Claire.Apparently Claire,Thea’s sister had also gone missing and she bears
an uncanny resemblance to Megan. They are of the same age and Megan is
surprised.Soon there comes a new nightshift cook – Nick.He is an excellent cook
and customers love his food.Megan can’t understand why he would choose to
work in this diner. She has her suspicions that he is hiding something.
“Newcomers in small towns were usually running away from something.
I would know..”
They soon begin to grow closer and Nick is able to break down her walls. With
his help she is able to heal from the mental scars left behind by the traumatic
experience. He sees her as she is and considers her beautiful and strong inspite
of the scars.
Huffing dramatically, I snarked,

“Do I look like the kind of girl that would
“Honestly?” I cocked my eyes, challenging him to finish. “You look
like the kind of girl that wants at least one tattoo, but is too shy to show
it, so you put it somewhere under those lacey undergarments of yours.”

Well, shit. All except the lace part. Nowadays I didn’t feel that
sexy in my skin, so I didn’t bother with the lace.”
But soon a shocking truth comes to light which shakes the basic foundation of
what Megan thought she knew and her life will never be the same.
Megan is a very strong and resilient protagonist.Inspite of all the horrors she
went through she is still able to focus on the future and is determined to never
be caught in the same situation again. But fate has other plans. She goes through
a painful experience again in the last quarter of the book.Though the scenes
aren’t graphic it would be advisable to make up your mind before you read this
book if you aren’t used to such dark books.Granted it isn’t as dark as Comfort
Food or Tears of Tess but still it isn’t a light read either.
I love the unexpected twists and turns that Ms.Ashley created.Though it was
nice to see Megan heal with the help of Nick,I wish we could have created
more new memories with him.We weren’t given a chance to fully see him in the
second half of the book. The secondary characters like Thea,Paul and Darla
were well written. But they were present for a short time only. This book mainly
revolves around the mystery of Megan’s past, her healing and how she eventually
discovers her strength. It was a lovely book and I can’t wait to read Nearly
