by Rachael Anderson

Synopsis

After years of pinching pennies and struggling to get through art
school, Emma Makie’s hard work finally pays off with the offer of a dream job.
But when tragedy strikes, she has no choice but to make a cross-country move
to Colorado Springs to take temporary custody of her two nieces. She has no
money, no job prospects, and no idea how to be a mother to two little girls, but
she isn’t about to let that stop her. Nor is she about to accept the help of Kevin
Grantham, her handsome neighbor, who seems to think she’s incapable of doing
anything on her own.
Prejudice Meets Pride is the story of a guy who thinks he has it all figured out
and a girl who isn't afraid to show him that he doesn't. It’s about learning what
it means to trust, figuring out how to give and to take, and realizing that not

Prejudice Meets Pride is the first book of Rachael Anderson’s that
I have read and I must say I love it.I was in the mood for some contemporary
romance and I came across this book while browsing Goodreads.I am a big Jane
Austen fan and I have read so many Pride and Prejudice retellings, so naturally
I was drawn to the title and the book cover. But this book is not a P&P retelling
(Thank God!!).

The main character Emma Makie moves into the house next to that of the
other protagonist-Kevin Grantham. She has become the temporary guardian of
her two nieces-Kajsa and Adelynn as their mother had died in an accident and
their father Noah(Emma’s brother) can’t get away from his construction job to
take care of them.

She doesn’t have a job and has just moved into the house in
Colorado Springs (which she had inherited from her great aunt) with the two
Kevin her neighbor is a pediatric dentist and comes from a well-off family. He
has the bad habit of forming prejudices about someone when he meets
them.

He is successful in his job, is dating a woman who meets his snobby
mother’s expectations and basically has followed the plan laid out for him by his
parents. The first time he sees Emma he thinks she is a poor single mother with
an ugly yellow Datsun. The next day he offers to help Emma out in the grocery
store when she doesn’t have enough money at hand to pay.But Emma flat-out
refuses. He even delivers the groceries to her house which she returns.

Kevin just wants to help her out and can’t understand why she keeps
refusing.Let it be with the lawnmower or sprinkler, Emma’s pride doesn’t allow
her to take his help because she likes to be self-sufficient and she doesn’t want
his pity. But soon Emma learns to overcome her pride and accepts his help for
the sake of the girls. He offers her a job at his office even when there was no
need for an extra employee. As they start spending time together they realise
that they were wrong in their assumptions of each other and slowly start to fall
I absolutely adored Emma’s character.She was such a hard-worker and a loving
aunt.

As her parents worked in many relief efforts Emma has always been on the
move and has lived in so many countries. She worked hard to get into art school
and successfully graduated from RISD.Even though she was offered a very good
job, she still turned it down to take care of Kajsa and Adelynn. How many people
would do that for their nieces??She is an optimist.

“She believed in fixing things up and wearing them out.Making them do or
doing without. She believed in second chances, which was exactly what she’d
give this home-just as soon as she found a job and replenished her bank
Kevin was an awesome male lead.Even though he grew up in a rich household and
everything he wanted was given to him he still yearns for the warmth and love
which he didn’t get from his parents. When he sees the love that Emma has for
her nieces, the hugs and kisses they give each other he feels like he has finally
found a place where he belongs.Though Emma was not the type of girl that he
imagined himself with , he slowly sees her for who she truly is and begins to fall
in love with her.

“You don’t have to be strong all the time, and it doesn’t make you less of a
person to need help once in a while.Give and take is what life is all about,
and sometimes you have to be the one to take so the other person can
give.I want to do things for you because I care about you and enjoy helping
you, not because I pity you or think you’re incapable.I wish you could see
The cute little angels- Kajsa and Adelynn added so much humor and sweetness
to the story.

It is lovely to see their interactions with “Uncle Kevin”.Becky and
her daughter Sam, the neighbours were also well developed. It was wonderful
to see Emma get rid of her pride and Kevin overcome his prejudices. They were
both able to figure out what they want from life.Their slow transition from
friendship to sweet romance was so well written.Even Kevin’s mother was not as
bad as I thought she was.In the end she encourages her son to go after what he
wants.Though we only got tiny glimpses of Noah we could see how much he loved
the girls and how hard it was for him to be away from them. Can’t wait to read
his story in Rough Around the Edges meets Refined!!
