Review: I just love how Cecy Robson always manages to write stories that have the perfect mix of rawness,emotion and humor.I've been a fan of hers ever since I read her Weird Girls series and her contemporary romance novels are equally great.
As the summary describes, we have Callahan-an ex-army sniper, who has dedicated years in service to the nation and has seen unspeakable horrors that have left him reeling with nightmares and PTSD.He inherits his uncle's house on Kiawah Island and starts working as a bartender hoping to finally get some peace and reprieve.He isn't really interested in meeting anyone or making friends.
On the other hand, we have Trinity, who was raised on the island.She is just recovering from a bad relationship, where the guy she thought she loved, cheated on her with one of her best friends and they never apologized to her.Her family despite being well-off has always taught her to help those in need, so she has enlisted in the Peace Corps and decides to spend one last summer on the island with her close knit group of friends before she heads off.She and her friends work as lifeguards.
When they go out partying one night, she sees Callahan and she is determined to befriend this broody,hot guy.In the beginning Callahan is very disinterested and keeps pushing her away, but Trinity is relentless in her determination and manages to strike up a friendship with him which soon turns into something more larger that neither of them could have ever anticipated.So, will Callahan let Trin in?And what will happen when he finds out she is leaving after the summer?Will it be just a summer fling or a forever thing?Read the book to find out!
I loved Trinity's character!Let me tell you, most people would find such perky,happy-go-lucky,optimistic people annoying.I almost did.But, its really hard not to love her sweetness,concern for others and the goodness in her heart!She wormed her way into my heart just as she did with Callahan.They were a perfect match for each other!Callahan with his demons and reticence needed someone who was willing to push him out of his shell and make him laugh a little.And that's what Trinity does-she becomes the light in his dark days.
Callahan's broodiness also wasn't overdone.He didn't really have that tortured-hero vibe thankfully.He was a realistic hero who was suffering the aftermath of the war that has affected millions.Trinity's friends were also really awesome, especially Becca.Trinity's family also played a large part and I am glad for that.I loved her parents and her brother.The dinner scenes were absolutely hilarious!
The intensity of Trinity and Callahan's relationship was just perfect.Some moments brought tears to my eyes.It has a little bit of the angsty feel to it, but I loved the mix of that along with the romance and connections that just tugged at my heartstrings.The epilogue was just perfect *swoons*.Can't wait to read Becca and Hale's story.
So, as I mentioned before, if you're looking for a read with the perfect combination of intensity,romance and sweetness, this is it!And be sure to give Cecy Robson's other books a try, as they are beautiful in the same way as this one. :D

Prologue
Callahan
Three days.
That’s all I have left until this shit ends.
Three days shouldn’t feel like forever, not compared to the eight years I’ve bled to the Army. Thing is, good men have been killed in less time. In as quick as a blink, a squeeze of a trigger, or a small breath right before a grenade blows is all the time it takes to shove someone right out of life and well into death.
That’s what makes three days as long as it is. Three days is plenty of time to die.
My eyes tear when the wind picks up and shoots grime through the small hole of my lookout point. This blown out piece of cinderblock is only big enough to allow me a view of the street below, but not so small I don’t get smacked in the face with more filth. The tarp flaps above me as I spit out another layer of the dirt-sand mix spackling my teeth. Christ Almighty, I need a swig of the water resting near my elbow. But my thirst, like everything else has to wait.
I have a job to do.
I adjust my hips against the cracked cement of my bed, bathroom, and home all rolled into one, thankful that the agonizing ache stretching over the lower half of my body has settled into a now familiar numbness.
Out of all the points I’d scouted, and all the accumulated years spent in this position, I should be used to it. And in a strange way, it should almost be home. Yet nothing ever has been home.
But in three days, maybe something finally will be . . .
I shove my thoughts away and breathe as my fellow Rangers stalk along the street. It’s then I see them, a mother and daughter walking straight toward my team. Less than one city block separates them from the men counting on me to keep them alive.
The hell? How did they get past the other sniper unreported? Rogers is new on watch. But the quick paces these two are taking should have clued him in that something’s up. I train my scope on their faces; their expressions are blank, unreadable. ‘Cept that’s not what keeps my attention.
The little girl can’t be more than five. So why the fuck isn’t her mother holding her hand? I lift my radio and bark a warning, dropping it beside me as I lock my scope dead center on the woman’s head.
The radio crackles and Modreski chimes in, yelling at his team to hold their positions. He asks me what my plan is, knowing if something’s caused the short-hairs on my neck to rise, he and the boys damn well need to listen. But I don’t hear him, with a breath and a squeeze of the trigger, I leave a kid without a mother.
Just beneath the sleeve of her abayah―the dress completely covering her body―I see it, a detonator that would trigger the explosives likely strapped to her chest. A few Rangers I know―Simons and Boreman, rush forward. I start to mutter a curse, pissed at her for making me shoot her in front of her kid. But the curse lodges in my throat when I see the kid isn’t looking at her mother lying next to her dead.
She’s watching my advancing team as she lifts the detonator clasped tight in her hand.

This song is the first song Callahan sings to Trinity. That’s right y’all, in addition to being a sexy ex-Army Ranger, Callahan sings and learned to play some songs by ear on his guitar. *insert bouts of swooning here.

The melody speaks so much of Callahan, someone who wants to forget the world and everyone in it, until he finds Trinity to lie with and return to that world that’s been so unkind to him.
