Lotus Effect
by Trisha Wolfe
Publication Date : April 30th 2019
Lakin Hale, true crime writer and victim of an attack that left her for dead, helps crime solvers and victims close cold cases, yet there is one crime she hasn’t been able to solve:
Her own.
As she embarks on a new case, working closely with Special Agent Rhys Nolan, the details of the murder begin to eerily resemble the event that nearly ended her life. A silhouette of a man haunts her dreams, but there were only two people there that night—Lakin and her murderer. Is the phantom hero who pulled her from the water a delusion, or is he the only one who can unlock her dark memories?
Buried in a watery grave of lotuses, the victim calls out to Lakin, unearthing painful memories of what was stolen from her that fateful night. For those that played a part, it’s now time to answer for their sins.
" I'm an open ending. I hate open endings".
Trisha Wolfe has blown me away once again with this book! I'd been dying to get my hands on it ever since she announced her plans for this book and it was definitely worth the wait!!
Lotus Effect is a little different from her usual books, in the sense that it is a psychological thriller more than a dark romance, but the overall atmosphere and the lyrical quality of Trisha Wolfe's writing remains the same and that's my favourite part!
I won't dive deep into the story as it's best to go in blind. The book is told solely from the viewpoint of Lakin Hale, once a promising psychology student before the brutal attack that left her for the dead among the lotus blooms in the lake. The attack not only took away her memories of the night, but also a part of her identity as well. She is now a true crime writer, who works on cold cases with FBI special agent Rhys Nolan. But despite solving many cases together, their first cold case - her attack remains unsolved.
But what happens when they come across a case eerily similar to her attack? Is it her imagination or is the killer back again? Who is it and what happened that night? To get answers to all her questions she must face her painful past to move forward.
"Real memory or recovered memory? You might think: what's the difference? A memory is a memory."
My favourite thing about psychological thrillers is that through the course of the book, we as readers must decide how much to rely on the narrator's recollection of events and story to see the big picture. How much is true and how much is what they think is true? Puzzle clues are masterfully hidden in Lotus Effect for both us and Lakin to find out. We experience her journey along with her.
"Humans were designed to forget. Our brains are not meant to retain every day of our lives. It's the only way we can come in terms with and reconcile our past; accept the life we've lived."
The attraction between Rhys and Lakin was also beautiful, but doesn't overtake the plot. I love how he supported her and understood her without judgement. I just wish we had more background on their working relationship! I would love to read a novella showing the past cases that they've solved?( Hint hint ;) )
"It's torturous, this confusing combination that I've never felt near Rhys before - only it feels as if it's not unfamiliar; like past and present colliding; the way it's always been."
So what are you waiting for? Go read this book! You'll definitely not be able to put it down once you start!
