Series : Ledgers of a Dark Mage
Genre : Dark Fantasy
Publication Date : 22nd March 2020
Three years after the events of Fractures, Thaleon continues his studies at Allesdale. No longer a novice mage, his life has taken on a comfortable routine of magical studies and working in the infirmary.

Meanwhile, Dawyn is making the best of his life in the one place he never wanted to be—the Crown’s army. His days are filled with endless training and lessons to prepare him for the life of hunting down rogue mages.

Unexpected events shatter the calm of their new lives. Thaleon must leave the safety of Allesdale and embark on a hopeless quest to Taliehin—the frozen wasteland of ice and monsters. Dawyn must face impossible odds in a brutal fight for his life and that of a friend's.

This was a perfect sequel to Fractures!

Shape of Nightmares picks up three years after the events of Fractures, and though I found the ending of the previous book a little abrupt, the beginning was pretty good for this one!

Thaleon and Dawyn are each working towards their own goals, held back by the circumstances of their respective situations, but fighting nonetheless! Dawyn is training to be a wehr while Thaleon is well into his mage studies, and they both think the other is dead. Thaleon has the additional problem of being a valekyn and he has to hide his dark magic.

Thaleon sets out on a quest to find the athellium, when a series of events lead to his friend Lyris being poisoned. Dawyn on the other hand has to deal with the prejudices that many harbor, and the actions of the valekyns that put him and his new mage friend in danger!

This book had an amazing mix of fantasy elements, fast paced action and such well developed characters! I loved seeing Dawyn and Thaleon go on their personal journeys! And finally Dawyn has a new companion - Fanvi, a carefree, sarcastic and talented mage! I loved the development of the friendship between them and I'm so shipping them together! The things that they had to go through had my heart breaking, but you can see how these experiences end up shaping Dawyn and his feelings on the valekyn!

I'm equal parts excited and terrified for what might happen when Dawyn and Thaelon meet each other again in the future! I hope we get to see it in the next book!
If you're looking for a unique and well developed dark fantasy series with amazing characters I'd definitely suggest this one! Can't wait for book three!
