USA Today bestselling author Vivienne Lorret launches a charming new trilogy about three debutantes who get more than they bargained for when it comes to the mating habits of scoundrels.
Heiress Winnifred Humphries refuses to marry the odious man her parents have chosen. She’ll marry for love or not at all. But how does a woman know a man truly loves her? Needing answers, she sets out to discover the marriage habits of London’s aristocrats. Yet when her friends kidnap a lord for research, Winn knows they’ve gone too far. Now she’s facing a wickedly handsome scoundrel who wants revenge.
Lord Asher Holt has the perfect plan to free himself of his father’s debts. But when a trio of foolish debutantes abduct him, their scheme ruins everything! Fuming and tied to a chair, Holt overhears that one of them is an heiress. Perhaps he isn’t above a little kidnapping either.
Yet, when the heiress runs away from her own wedding and straight into his waiting carriage, Holt finds himself on an adventure he’ll never forget, falling in love with a woman worth more than any treasure. But will Winn ever believe his heart only desires her… and not her fortune?
There were a lot of good releases in historical romance this March, and I think this was one of them along with An Heiress to Remember!
Lord Holt Takes a Bride has a memorable cover(who doesn't love that soft pink) and a refreshing twist on the old need-to-marry-for-money trope!
Winn is a rich heiress, who is being forced to marry an obnoxious man by her parents, but she wishes to marry for love. Her fiance is a tool who has a mistress and regards Winn as nothing more than a cash cow. So, on the day of the wedding she decides that she's had enough and runs away straight into a carriage, which she assumes is the one her friend Jane has arranged for her.
Lord Asher Holt was kidnapped by a pair of debutantes who wished to find out more about scoundrels in order to write a book(lol!), when he overhears them talking to their friend who is getting married the next day. He's got a despicable father who has run through all the money in the coffers, so when he loses the last bit of money that he had needed to make his future better, he assumes that the girls are responsible for it. Putting two and two together, he decides to pay the heiress a visit when she jumps into his carriage and urges him to take off!
And thus they go off on a madcap adventure! As they slowly begin to fall for each other, the risks keep rising and what will happen when Winn finds out the secrets that Asher has been hiding?
The book gets off to a good start with a group of debutantes kidnapping a lord(for research purposes of course) and I found that it had a great mix of romance, humor and steam! Winn was a little naive at times as she had led a sheltered life, but she made for a great heroine! I loved her desire to be independent and once she decided that she wouldn't listen to everyone else's opinions, she became quite strong! It was fun watching her discover herself and become more free as the journey progressed. Asher seemed to be similar to the typical HR heroes at first, but as the story went further we get to see more beyond his outer persona. His dad was a real piece of work and I hated him throughout the whole book.
On the other hand, Winn's parents were great additions and they have their own story arc where they slowly rekindle their marriage while searching for Winn, and we get to see their reasons for behaving the way they did. Winn also had an amazing group of friends and those ladies are hilarious! I can't wait to read their books!
If you're looking for a light historical romance with some road adventures and kidnapping, you should definitely check this one out! ;)
