Book Review : A Dark and Stormy Knight by Kerrigan Byrne

A Dark and Stormy Knight by Kerrigan Byrne
Series : Victorian Rebels #7
Genre : Historical Romance
Publisher : Oliver Heber Books
Publication Date : June 2nd, 2020

This Knight of the Crown is driven by a painful past and a patient fury… and his entire life is a lie.

Sir Carlton Morley is famously possessed of extraordinary will, singular focus, and a merciless sense of justice. As a man, he secured his fortune and his preeminence as Scotland Yard’s ruthless Chief Inspector. As a decorated soldier, he was legend for his unflinching trigger finger, his precision in battle, and his imperturbable strength. But as a boy, he was someone else. A twin, a thief, and a murderer, until tragedy reshaped him.

Now he stalks the night, in search of redemption and retribution, vowing to never give into temptation, as it’s just another form of weakness.

Until temptation lands—quite literally—in his lap, taking the form of Prudence Goode.

Prim and proper Pru is expected to live a life of drudgery, but before she succumbs to her fate, she craves just one night of desire. On the night she searches for it, she stumbles upon a man made of shadows, muscle and wrath… And decides he is the one.

When their firestorm of passion burns out of control, Morley discovers, too late, that he was right. The tempting woman has become his weakness.

A weakness his enemies can use against him.

I've been waiting for this book for almost a year and it was definitely worth the wait! Historical romance is one of my favorite genres and Kerrigan Byrne is an author who always delivers compelling stories with beautiful characters!

A Dark and Stormy Knight is book 7 in the Victorian Rebels series and can be read as a standalone, but you'd love it even more if you've read each book in the series and have come to love all the characters in the books the way that I do!

We've got Chief Inspector Carlton Morley, who's been a secondary character in many of the previous books and we finally get to learn more about him and his story here! I've been waiting for this man to get his own HEA and Prudence was someone I'd have never imagined for him. And surprisingly, after reading the book I could see why they were perfect for each other!

I was hooked from page one and I literally couldn't put the book down! Morley is a police inspector by day and vigilante at night. Prudence Goode is engaged to a man who has been having affairs with other women, even before their marriage could truly begin. A fateful night brings these two together in a brothel where Pru wishes to lose her virginity and have one night for herself, before she has to marry George. She literally falls into Morley's lap(loved that scene) and thinks that he's one of the Stags of St. James! And you can imagine how things go from there ;)

And they meet each other three months later at Pru's wedding, when they find George dead and Pru holding the knife in her hands!

The story really picks up from here and I loved watching everything unfold! Pru and Morley end up marrying each other, but it's upto him to solve the murder. And he's not one to trust others easily! Though it was frustrating at times to see him openly doubting Pru's innocence, I could see where he was coming from! I loved reading about his past and how he became the man he is now!

Pru is so sweet and innocent, but at the same time she is strong in her own ways! Both she and Morley were forced together by their circumstances and it took a while to make it work. The best part was the chemistry between them which was done so well that I could feel it from the very first garden scene! I loved watching these two slowly opening up to each other, with some help from the other characters ;)

The mystery was neatly done and it wasn't much of a surprise to me when everything was revealed, but I loved seeing things fall into place!  Now all I need is Sebastian Moncrieff's book which is up next and I'm sooo excited for it!
Also, it seems like there might be an interesting story with Pru's sister and Titus Conleith! Hope she gets her own story in the future!
