Bestselling author Jennifer Estep returns to her Crown of Shards world with an all-new trilogy and a bold new heroine who protects her kingdom from magic, murder, and mayhem by moonlighting as a spy.

Gemma Ripley has a reputation for being a pampered princess who is more interested in pretty gowns, sparkling jewelry, and other frivolous things than learning how to rule the kingdom of Andvari. But her carefully crafted persona is just an act to hide the fact that Gemma is a powerful mind magier—and a spy.

Gemma is undercover, trying to figure out who is stealing large amounts of tearstone from one of the Ripley royal mines when she encounters Prince Leonidas Morricone of Morta—her mortal enemy. Gemma tries to steer clear of the handsome prince, but when she finds herself behind enemy lines, she reluctantly joins forces with Leo. Also coming to Gemma’s aid is Grimley, her beloved gargoyle.

Despite the fact that Andvari and Morta are old, bitter enemies, a dangerous attraction sparks between Gemma and Leo. Further complicating matters is Leo’s murderous family, especially Queen Maeven Morricone, the mastermind behind the infamous Seven Spire massacre.

The closer Gemma gets to the stolen tearstone, the more deadly plots she uncovers. Everyone is trying to capture the crown, but only one queen can sit on the throne…

B&N
I didn't get to read much during this week as I was a little busy, but I did finish reading Capture the Crown by Jennifer Estep and I loved it! I'd been reading a lot of contemporary romance books and I wanted to switch it up with some fantasy. So this new release which is a spin-off from my favorite trilogy was the perfect read for me!

Capture the Crown is book one in the Gargoyle Queen series and can be easily read as a standalone. But, do check out the Crown of Shards trilogy because I lovvve Evie and Lucas! Jennifer Estep is one of my favorite authors when it comes to UF, but I've ended up loving her fantasy books too! This book follows Gemma Ripley, the crown princess of Andvari, who is usually seen as a pampered socialite. But, what most people don't know is that underneath this sparkling facade is a powerful spy. And she's now undercover while digging into the theft of the tearstone from the royal mines. As she faces a lot of hardships and encounters danger, she ends up meeting Leonidas, the prince of Morta, her enemy. Andvari and Morta are destined to be on the opposite sides of the fight, and being the members of two opposing royal families who are at odds places them in a dangerous situation, especially when they're attracted to each other!

Gemma was an interesting heroine and quite different from the ones that I usually love in my fantasy reads! She isn't a kick-ass gladiator like Evie from the previous trilogy, but she is strong in other ways and very smart! I loved all the political scheming and twists in this one! Gemma is intelligent and knows how to make use of her strengths while overcoming the dangers of her magic. Leonidas was also quite interesting in that typical mysterious-fantasy-hero way. They have a enemies to lovers relationship and a little insta-attraction, but the romance is a bit of a slow burn as they plot takes the center stage.

My favorite part was definitely the world-building and the descriptions! Jennifer's writing makes the places and events come alive in a beautiful way! And I also loved Gemma's gargoyle, Ripley! He's one if my favorite characters! The only thing that was a little puzzling to me was probably the overall feel of the romance. Though I loved the development of the relationship, it came off a little YA-ish, perhaps because of the enemies to lovers setup or the characters, but idk if it's meant to be that way? Because the rest of the book gives off an adult/NA Fantasy vibe.

Anyway, I think this was a really great start to a new series and I'd definitely recommend it of you're looking for a fun fantasy romance with lots of action and great characters! The ending has me really excited for the next book! Can't wait for it!
