Book Review : For The Wolf by Hannah Whitten

For The Wolf by Hannah Whitten
Series : Wilderwood #1
Genre : Fantasy
Publisher : Orbit Books
Publication Date : June 1st, 2021
The first daughter is for the Throne.
The second daughter is for the Wolf.

As the only Second Daughter born in centuries, Red has one purpose-to be sacrificed to the Wolf in the Wood in the hope he'll return the world's captured gods.

Red is almost relieved to go. Plagued by a dangerous power she can't control, at least she knows that in the Wilderwood, she can't hurt those she loves. Again.

But the legends lie. The Wolf is a man, not a monster. Her magic is a calling, not a curse. And if she doesn't learn how to use it, the monsters the gods have become will swallow the Wilderwood-and her world-whole.

B&N
I just finished reading the Wilderwood books by Hannah Whitten last week (I'm so glad I didn't have to wait for book 2😆) and it was probably one of my faves from last month! It was so good, especially book one - For The Wolf! I finished reading it in one sitting and I didn't want to put it down! I loved the writing and the creepy but captivating atmosphere. It gave me a little bit of that Juliet Marillier feeling (not writing wise because the style is different), but the setting with the slow build up of tension, moody vibes and character development.⁣
The first daughter is for the Throne.⁣
The second daughter is for the Wolf.⁣
Redarys/Red is a second daughter and she has known her destiny for a long time - to be a sacrifice. And as much as her sister Neve would like her to shirk this responsibility and run away, she's determined to go ahead with it, as she hides a dark secret, something that happened the last time when they ventured into the woods. And it keeps growing constantly, making it difficult for her to control. ⁣
But what she doesn't expect in the Wilderwood is the current Wolf - Eammon, who's quite different from what she had imagined according to the legends. And what's more terrifying is the dark reality behind the Wilderwood, what lies beyond it and the price that they must pay to keep certain things at bay.⁣
Book one has a Beauty and the Beast setup with the creepy woods, a castle in ruins, a love interest who is trapped due to magic and a protagonist who unwillingly ventures into this. Red and Eammon have a slow burn relationship and I love how they start off as reluctant allies, slowly build up the trust between them and grow closer.⁣
I also loved the sisterhood between Red and Neve. It's a major part of both the books! ⁣
Anyway, that's enough gushing from me now! Go read these two books!😆⁣

Hannah Whitten has been writing to amuse herself since she could hold a pen, and sometime in high school, figured out that what amused her might also amuse others. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, making music, or attempting to bake. She lives in an old farmhouse in Tennessee with her husband, children, two cats, a dog, and probably some ghosts.
