Against A Wall by Cate C. Wells
Series : Stonecut County #2
Genre : Contemporary Romance
My high school bully is now my fake boyfriend.
Cash Wall has been messing with me since junior high.
Nuisance stuff, mostly. Name calling. Pranks.
Honestly, he's nowhere near the worst of my problems. Back in school, I
had bigger fish to fry, and now, I've got a "scarlet letter" situation
going on. The whole town hates me.
For some reason, Cash offers himself up as my knight in shining armor.
So now my former bully is my fake boyfriend. What could possibly go wrong?
Cash
Glenna Dobbs thinks I'm an idiot, and she's mostly right.
I hunt. Fish. Go mudding. I'm not a "brain" type. I'm not really a
"thinker."
But I ain't stupid. When I see that Glenna needs a rescue, I'm in.
'Cause what Glenna doesn't know? I've been in this whole time, and once
I've got her, I'm not letting her go.
Against a Wall is a small-town, enemies-to-lovers romance. It is the
second book in the Stonecut County series, but it can be read as a
standalone. Intended for adult readers.
Available on Kindle Unlimited!
Never thought that I'd find another author to fall in love with just as
the year is ending!😂
I'd seen so many reviews about Cate C. Wells' books on bookstagram and
it had me very curious. So, I picked this one up two days back and I
have to say it - You guys were right!
Personally, I felt that it was the right decision for me to pick this
one first among the author's books. It was a cute small-town romance
with less angst and an adorable himbo who is totally head over heels in
love with the heroine!
There's only one person that always manages to get on Glenna Dobbs' last
nerve and it's Cash Wall. He has more or less bullied her since high
school days and still pulls pranks on her as she tries not to lose her
patience. Cash runs his own hunting and fishing guide business and he's
the darling of their small town. Everyone loves him and his charming
smile - except for Glenna of course. At the same time, Glenna works at
her family's coffee shop and is a photographer in her free time. And the
whole town hates her - because of the article about Del
Willis(another person that the whole town adores) that their
family-owned newspaper had published. And though she gets a lot of rude
comments she brushes it off.
While she's out in the mountains trying to capture some photographs, one
of Cash's clients accidentally shoots her and Cash can't hide his
concern for her anymore. As this incident brings them together, they also
discover that her father has been getting some threats, and Cash has a
perfect proposal to keep her safe - fake dating so that he can keep an
eye on her and the town will also lose the hate that they have against
her(I mean one would be blind to not notice that he has his own selfish
reasons for doing this😆).
And so Cash's quest to win Glenna's heart begins!😂
“And if I had a thing for Glenna Dobbs, I’d have her eating out
my hand.” Now I’m telling a bold- faced lie.
(You just have to read a few chapters to know who's eating out of
whose hand lol😆)
Poor guy has been pining for her for so long. But, he showed it in all
the wrong ways. I mean it was totally wrong for him to keep doing this
childish pulling-the-pigtails-of-the-girl-you-like behavior, but he's
too dumb to figure out a better way to get her attention. I couldn't
really bring myself to hate him though, because he shows us in all the
ways the respect and adoration that he has for Glenna!
Also, I wouldn't really classify it as an intense bully romance? Because I've
read ones that had serious bullying and I find that what makes a
difference is how aggrieved the heroine feels and how much effect it has
on her. In this one, Glenna was hurt by some stuff that he did but she'd
learned to brush it off a long time ago and she does make it clear that
she really disliked him.
I'd also really like to appreciate the fact that though Cash is not
very smart - he knows how to read people and react. He's what I'd call
an astute himbo. This is one example.
“Now, that’s better,” he murmurs in my ear. “You didn’t frown
this time.”
“I wasn’t frowning at your flowers.”
“I know,” he says so low that only I can hear. “You thought the
flowers are my game. You don’t like the idea that I’m playing
you.”
I tense and keep my eyes on the centerpiece. I can’t believe he’s
saying this here. At least with the kids pouring in, there’s
enough ruckus that no one’s paying attention to us.
"I’m not playing you,” he says. “I’m serious.”
(Let's pat his head for this one🐶)
And the way he cares about her and respects her had my heart
going awww. I can't stop gushing about it! Also, he'd never let
anyone lay a finger on her! I loved finding out more about him and why he turned out to be the way he is now(And I had to google truck nuts to find a picture lol)
And I don't want to ignore Glenna while I keep talking about Cash! She's so strong and amazing. At first, she comes off as grumpy - but she's just hiding behind her walls. I loved how honest she was about her grief. Even if it's been years it sneaks up on you and you feel the same punch that you did before. The loss of her mom brought about many changes in her life and none of the people in the town or even Cash understood that. She does find her own footing and self-confidence again, which I absolutely loved seeing! The romance between Cash and Glenna was truly perfect! I loved all the ways Cash supported her and showed his care and how Glenna reciprocated too!
I don't think I could find a single thing to complain about in this book! I loved everything from the romance and the steam to the secondary characters! Cash's family looks simple at first but each one of them(including his mom) is unique and complicated in their own way. A few other favorites of mine were - Cash's dog Granger, his best friend Brice and Glenna's dad!
Okay, I'll stop rambling now because this review shouldn't keep getting longer 😂. Just give this one a try alright? You'll definitely love it! And I'm off to read Cate C. Wells' backlist while I wait for more books in this series! Got any suggestions on where I should start?
