Book Review : Kate In Waiting by Becky Albertalli

Kate In Waiting by Becky Albertalli
Genre : YA Contemporary, LGBTQ

Contrary to popular belief, best friends Kate Garfield and Anderson Walker are not codependent. Carpooling to and from theater rehearsals? Environmentally sound and efficient. Consulting each other on every single life decision? Basic good judgment. Pining for the same guys from afar? Shared crushes are more fun anyway.

But when Kate and Andy’s latest long-distance crush shows up at their school, everything goes off script. Matt Olsson is talented and sweet, and Kate likes him. She really likes him. The only problem? So does Anderson.

Turns out, communal crushes aren’t so fun when real feelings are involved. This one might even bring the curtains down on Kate and Anderson’s friendship.

B&N
I've been slowly making my way through Becky Albertalli's backlist, so I was quite excited to read this one. A YA book with the MC and her gay best friend crushing on the same guy? I was like ooh 😆⁣
High school junior Kate Garfield and her bff - Anderson Walker are like two peas in a pod. They do so many things together, share common interests - and crush on the same guys. They jokingly call it a communal crush and it has never brought any tension to their friendship because they obsess over their crushes, gush about them to each other and move on after a while. But this time it seems to be different! Their summer theater camp crush - Matt Olson has transferred into their school and he has joined their theater program too. And as the three start growing closer, Kate and Andy have a problem on their hands as this has started to affect their friendship too!⁣
This was actually a very light and fun YA read without too much drama. The premise had me thinking that there'd be more friction in the friendship so I was actually thankful that there wasn't any unnecessary drama. At the core, I think the focus is on Kate and Andy's friendship and I loved the emphasis on how beautiful platonic friendships can be too! Kate also had a few other friends - Raina and Brandie who made this book more amazing! Kate's brother - Ryan was also a great addition and I loved how he put in the effort to become closer to her. And I shouldn't forget Noah - who was my favorite character in this book after Kate! He's so cute and funny, and provides a nice balance to Kate's seriousness 😂⁣
The setup points at a love triangle but while reading it I didn't get those vibes as I'd guessed some things early on. But my favorite part was definitely Kate and Andy's friendship and how they talked to each other while sorting things out! Do check this one out if you're looking for a light, fun contemporary YA with lots of humor and amazing friendships!
