The Chemistry of Familiar Objects by Alexandra Vasti
Genre : Historical Romance, Novella
Publication Date : January 29th, 2024
57 Gresham Street is the most incendiary building in London.

Upstairs, unconventional chemist Emmeline Starling uses combustion to solve scientific mysteries. Downstairs, buttoned-up children’s book printer Robert Vane tries very hard not to panic when the ceiling catches on fire. And when these two opposing forces are contained within one small building? Explosions are just the beginning.

After two years of putting up with Robert Vane’s scowls, his precious rules, and the infuriating cleft in his chin, Emmeline has seized upon a solution to the problem of sharing 57 Gresham: she’s purchased the entire building. Her attempt to remove Vane is thwarted, however, when Em and Robert uncover the theft of one of Em’s most dangerous compounds.

Soon Em and Robert are on the run together, chasing a ring of industrial spies who mean to use her discovery as a weapon. From a ship to an island to a foundry in Wiltshire, Em and Robert keep finding themselves trapped together—and close proximity transforms their sparks into a conflagration. For two passionate people who’ve always been at odds, explosive chemicals are nothing compared to the biggest risk of all: falling disastrously, catastrophically in love.

This was sooo good! I can't get enough of Alexandra's novellas tbh because they always have such smart, funny and swoonworthy characters! The stories have an amazing plot along with some steamy romance while not being too long or too short either - pretty much perfect!⁣
So, in this one, we have our two protagonists who unwillingly share the same building - Emmeline Starling, an unconventional chemist who rents the top floor where she works on her projects and experiments(that might explode sometimes) while Robert Vane, a children's book printer works below. They're opposites and butt heads at every turn, and Emmeline has finally managed to buy the building after two years. Just when she's planning on evicting him, they end up running into an unexpected situation as they find out that Em's notes and chemical compounds have been stolen. And they jump right into the action by trying to track these thieves together while spending time with each other too!⁣
I absolutely loved both Emmeline and Robert in this one! Robert seems like a starchy, rule follower at first but he's also very caring, gentle and protective. Em might bring some chaos but she has a method to her madness and she's very intelligent! I loved how Robert grounded her while Em helped him loosen up. They had the perfect opposites attract dynamic 😍 and the chemistry between them was off the charts! They were totally gone for each other! Em's family members were so hilarious too and I couldn't stop laughing at their antics. The plot had some adventurous moments and I loved how they were perfectly balanced with the romance!⁣
Anyway, I should probably stop gushing about this one now but I highly recommend this novella if you're looking for a light, funny and beautiful historical romance read! You can read it for free by signing up for the author's newsletter! ❣️✨

Alexandra Vasti comes from a long line of romance-reading Vasti women. She fell in love with historical romance at age 11 and still swoons for Laura Kinsale and Judith McNaught.

Alex lives in Louisiana, where she teaches literature at a university by day and writes romance by night. Somewhere in there she also raises three kids and two mostly feral kitties. She’s powered by guacamole and oat milk lattes, though not usually at the same time.
