USA Today bestselling author Vivienne Lorret continues the Mating Habits of Scoundrels series with a debutante who believes she is destined to marry the lord next door until a fateful encounter with a rogue makes her wonder... if she might be falling for the wrong marquess!
The wrong place...
Elodie Parrish can feel spinsterhood breathing down her neck. That’s the trouble with waiting for the marquess next door her entire life. But Ellie knows if she gives him one last Season, he’ll finally propose. The only problem is, her path keeps crossing with the arrogant Lord Hullworth, who is convinced she has designs on him.
The wrong time...
Brandon, Marquess of Hullworth, never wanted to be “London’s Most Elusive Bachelor,” or have a horde of hopeful debutantes and their scheming mamas follow him around. His past has left him too jaded to consider marrying any of them. At least, that’s what he thinks... until he meets Ellie. She’s quirky, opinionated, blushes easily, and drives him absolutely wild. The only problem is, she believes she’s in love with someone else.
Ellie never imagined that one sultry summer could change everything. But the more time she spends with Brandon researching her book on the mating habits of scoundrels, the more she wonders if she might be falling for…
The Wrong Marquess
This was even better than the previous two books in the series and I loved it so much! The Wrong Marquess is the third book in The Mating Habits of Scoundrels series and it follows Ellie who has been in love with her childhood friend George for almost half of her life and she really needs a proposal from him before the season ends. She had lost her father when she was young and it left a deep impression on her, which has led to her having many fears(or what we'd now call anxiety) and so she finds George a safe and reliable option even if he never takes her or his responsibilities seriously.
On the other hand, we have Brandon who became the Marquess of Hullworth unexpectedly after a series of tragedies. And he is escorting his sister, Meg during the season while avoiding marriage-minded debutantes and their mothers. His previous love had cruelly left him and married another as she didn't see much hope for his future, so he doesn't have much trust left in the concept of love or women.
But, when an unexpected meeting with Ellie has them at odds with each other at first, they discover the simmering attraction between them! With Ellie set on making George marry her, will Brandon be able to change her mind before it's too late?
I loved the slow development of the relationship between Ellie and Brandon! The attraction between them was palpable from the get-go, but they start off with a few love-hate interactions while being snippy with each other and then gradually evolve into friends and lovers! The sexual tension between them had me fanning myself and I've always loved Vivienne Lorret's writing when it comes to the steamy scenes!
I think Brandon is my favorite among the heroes in this series! He might look a little gruff at first, but he has a marshmallow heart and he's so patient and caring when it comes to Ellie! He's willing to work to change Ellie's mind when it comes to her choice of marriage partner and he's brave enough to take a chance even though he's been hurt before! He also helps her overcome her fears and teaches her to trust herself and others!
Ellie might not be as brave as Jane or her other friends, but she is very loyal to those she cares about and is always there for them when they need her! Her aunts were so amusing and I loved their hilarious antics! There is also Meg, Brandon's sister who is very lively and quirky! The relationship between the two siblings was so sweet and heart-warming. Brandon is always there to protect her while being a tad bit overbearing at times and they bicker with each other just like typical brothers and sisters.
And George - ugh, I totally ended up hating him. In the beginning, he was a little flighty and funny, but seeing the way he treated Ellie and how dismissive he was of her, I just wanted Ellie to throw him away. After, the revelations about Prue and her scandal, I was even more annoyed! It took Ellie longer than I'd have liked to completely break off from George, and though I understood her fears and reasoning, it wasn't nice to hurt Brandon that way. But, I did love the character development that she underwent and how she handled everything in the end.
The next book is Prue's I suppose, and I wasn't too impressed with her or her actions in this one, but Vivienne Lorret has always been good at making me fall for her characters so I'm looking forward to her story and subsequent growth! And I hope Meg also ends up getting a book later as I absolutely loved her in this one!
